Do you want the benefits of being a college student but want the practical experience of working on a real yard? Cheshire Riding School are a satellite centre for Manchester College for NVQ/BHS Qualifications up to Stage 3.
If you're passionate about horses and would like to gain a qualification working with them then an NVQ is the ideal qualification to gain. The NVQ is an assessment and question procedure so there are NO exams to worry about. NVQ qualifications are available to anyone and there is no age limit.
There are no college fees for 16-18 year olds or under 25s without previous HE/FE qualifications and some mature students may also qualify for exemption. Comfortable farm house accommodation is also available.

NVQ Level 1
Assist with the care of horses
Assist with cleaning the stables and yard
Assist with putting on, taking off and cleaning, equipment
Assist with handling horses
Maintain health, safety and good working relations
Additionally accredited unit:
Ride horses in an enclosed area
NVQ Level 2
Prepare and Clean Stables
Maintain the health and well-being of horses
Prepare horses for use
Prepare and maintain horses on grazing land
Prepare and provide non-ridden exercise and aftercare
Load and Unload hoses under supervision
Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
Maintain effective working relationships
Additionally accredited unit:
Exercise horses under supervision
NVQ Level 3
Plan and monitor routine care. Promote and maintain the health and well-being of horses. Maintain the health and well-being of horses during transportation prepare horses for work. Maintain activities to meet requirements. Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety (Employment NTO, Unit A). Along with the mandatory units there are also optional units in which some of these must be achieved.
The NVQ programmes are a more practical way of learning, a lot of the training will be given in a practical manner although there is some theory that has to be applied. Generally there is an hour theory session per day and the rest is a practical day. Please note that on all levels of NVQ there is a requirement of yard duties which count towards your guided learning hours. The NVQ levels 1 & 2 have a guided learning hours of 450 and is run over a year (30 weeks per year) The NVQ level 3 is a 2 year programme with a total of 900 guided learning hours. Once you have completed your qualification you can gain direct entry into a BHS exam e.g. once you have your NVQ level 2 you can apply to take your BHS PTT exam.
BHS PTT courses
This course is part time 30 weeks, at 4 hours per week and leads to the BHS PTT examination.
BHS RIDING & ROAD SAFETY
This is a 10 week course 3 hours per week.

BHS ESFAC Courses, Initial 2 days COURSE and a 1 day refresher course. 2010 DATES ARE;
Fit to Ride Lecture Wednesday 9th June 2010, 7pm - 9pm. This is an introductory lecture all about a new practical course to be available soon which is a combination of sports psychology and work on and off the horse to improve rider fitness and enable riders to connect with their horse.
